VA Interview – Lisa Bailey of Gut Feeling – Summer Fitness TipsVA Interview – Lisa Bailey of Gut Feeling – Summer Fitness Tips

Ah the summer! Long lazy days….well that’s the hope at least! Here in Scotland you can’t always guarantee the hot weather unfortunately, but that’s no reason to not get out and about and enjoy the fresh air. Fitness always seems so much easier in the summer – we look to get that beach body ready for wearing bikinis and it is easier to be outdoors – no fear of snow at least!

But we don’t necessarily want to spend hours of our time (particularly if we are on holiday) working out – so how best to get fit and spend time with significant others and/or family?

Here are some great ways to build fitness into your routine without it taking over your life – and to include everyone in the bargain.

Go for interesting walks – take along a rucksack and give everyone a task for looking for something specific eg white pebbles, interesting driftwood, shells etc… walking, squatting, bend, reaching and carrying will all be part of this expedition without even thinking about it. You can make some great gifts with all the bits & pieces gathered.

A bike ride & picnic – this speaks for itself really, get the bikes out, pack up a nutritious lunch and get out exploring!

Create an obstacle course in the garden! One that the whole family can enjoy – not only will you expend energy creating it but even more when you take part in it. Reward yourselves with a prize for completing it.

For more serious fitness options do a regular 10-minute HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) session every morning before breakfast. This can consist of a few rounds of cardio exercises such as jumping jacks, squat jumps, pushups, burpees – and again get the kids involved wherever possible. Teaching them to get moving and stay healthy is really important. Having a family competition makes it more appealing and fun. Aim to do something each day of your holiday and treat yourselves to a prize (such as a fun outing) when you reach the end of the week!

10 minute HIIT workout: 5 ROUNDS

Jumping Jacks x 10

Push ups x 10 (modify by doing these on your knees)

 Squat Jumps x 10

 Plank Jacks x 10

THEN: Hold a plank for as long as you can to finish!
